When I first started marketing myself as a photographer, I quickly realised something: The images alone weren’t enough.
I poured my heart into every shoot, but they didn’t always get the attention I hoped for online. Then I started studying the photographers I admired. Their work was beautiful—but so was their presence.
Clean, aesthetic behind-the-scenes content. Stories. Personality. A visual of them in action.
That’s when it clicked: People don’t just buy the product or in this case the service, they buy the person behind it.
I knew I had to start capturing BTS, but at first, it was an afterthought. Quick, rushed clips. I’d get home and realise—ugh, nothing usable. Meanwhile, my clients were thrilled with their photos, and I was proud of the work… but frustrated that I didn’t have anything to help keep the momentum going online.
Then I looked again at those top creators. They didn’t just take great images. They told great stories on their stories. They marketed with intentionality across the board.
So I made a decision:
Raise the standard—on everything. Including BTS content.
I started treating mobile content as part of the job. Buffered out 20 extra minutes at every shoot. Cleaned my phone screen. Straightened my frames. Styled the BTS just like I would a final image.
The result?
People noticed.
Clients started asking if they could pay me more for mobile content. BTS content started opening doors before the final images even dropped.
Here’s the truth:
BTS isn’t “extra.” It’s essential.
It builds trust. It shows you in your element. It’s intimate, real and surprisingly powerful.
And guess what? We all have a mobile phone. Stylish, thoughtful BTS is art—and it can genuinely be fun. It’s a small shift with major impact.
So if you’re a creative: Don’t sleep on BTS.
Your story deserves to be seen & this may just be the habit that gets you ahead of the constant search for your next client.
