From Retail Dreams to Freelance Reality

Back in the day, I worked in retail. If you’ve ever worked a slow shift, you know exactly the kind of soul-numbing boredom I’m talking about. Time felt like it was slipping through my fingers with nothing to show for it. On those painfully slow days, I’d stand behind the counter, grab a long receipt from the machine and scribble down all the things I could be doing if I were home — things that actually mattered to me.

Ideas, dreams, projects.

That’s where the seed was planted. I used to dream about working for myself — no manager, no shifts, no ceiling, no counting down the minutes to start time. Just freedom.

Fast forward a few years and that dream became reality. I found my way into freelance photography, building something that was mine, day by day. But here’s what no one tells you: once you’re in the game of entrepreneurship, the real work begins — and I’m not talking about just taking photos or building a brand.

I’m talking about self-honesty.

See, back in retail, the structure was handed to me. I showed up, clocked in, did the job, went home. Now? I was managing my own damn time & that’s both a gift and a responsibility.

It’s easy to romanticize entrepreneurship as “freedom,” but the truth is: you’re not free just because you no longer have a boss. Freedom in business only comes when your work is peaceful, streamlined, abundant, and most of all — intentional. That takes time. Daily effort. Discipline. Alignment. Planning. Relentless action… & years.

You gave your old job 8 hours a day without question — now it’s time to give your dream the same energy. Wake up with intention. Create a daily structure. Know what needs doing weekly and monthly. Take your idea seriously enough to turn it into a plan.

Because here’s the truth: you can dabble in business if you want — but your results will reflect that & you’ll be paying for it. Or, you can build. You can protect your time like your life depends on it — because if you’re an artist, a creative, or an independent business owner — it does.

Dreams don’t work just because you’re passionate. They work when you pair passion with structure, action and the guts to call yourself out.

So take your vision seriously.

Get honest. Get organised.

Above all, keep building.
